GOOD NEWS! - Nicotina a superb crime/gangster film from Mexico was the biggest Mexican movie of 2003 at the box office, is now hitting DVD in the US finally on a collectors edition DVD! ( already out in Spain,Australia with english subtitles ) BAD NEWS - the DVD doesnt hit stores until December.

The film stars now Hollywood actor Diego Luna as computer nerd hacker who comes into contact with a bunch of gangsters. This was probably my favorite film in the year I saw it, its been a while since I saw it, but its a impressive Crime film with some humourous moments thrown in, oh and the ending is a good one to.

The updated Aussie take on Macbeth, which looks to be very Gangster driven set in the Melbourne underworld is hitting DVD in Holland on a 2 Disc Special Edition DVD. The release is a upgrade on the bare bones Australian DVD which was released only a few months ago.

The film is directed by Geoffrey Rush who did Romper Stomper and stars Sam Worthington, which looks to be a straight up gangster-action film. The film opened in Australia last year, and didnt do too hot at the box office, but did manage 5 Australian Film Institute nominations.

The most expensive Belgium film ever ( $4.5mill EUROS ), this is Belgiums takes on Top Gun it seems. Windkracht was previously a TV series in Belgium called 'Storm Force 10’. The film debuted at number 1 in Belgium when it opened in Oct 06, and went on to earn around $1.7million. UK Distrubtion company High Point Films is currently handling worldwide distributiom, High Point films have recently taken the film to Cannes.

Til doden os skiller ( With your permission ) is a new Tragic comedy from prolific Danish screenwriter and director Anders Thomas Jensen, Anders is just the screenwriter on this project. Anders previously penned such film as Adams Apples, Efter brylluppet ( after the wedding ), I Kina spiser de hunde / In china they eat dogs , Mørke / Murke etc. The film is currently in post production and opens in Denmark late August of this year.

Anyway the synopsis reads like this:

Marko is currently filming Mirageman I believe after last years hugely success Chilean martials arts movie Kiltro. The DVD of Kiltro was released in Chile last December but contained no English subtitles on the release. Marko's first film Chinango ( 2002 ) does have a dvd release with english subtitles, check out amazon or any other US retailer.

Could it be the English language version of The Norwegian Animation Free Jimmy is making its DVD release in Sweden? The film has been dubbed into english by the likes of Simon Pegg and Woody ( White men can't jump ) Harrelson. The DVD release listed on a Swedish site lists the Audio as ENGLISH, it could be a mistake who knows, but I've found the listing on two sites, so it could be right. Although its probably best to wait until the DVD is actually releaed, so Swedish people can let others knows.

Today I came across a film made in 2005 which stars Pavel Barshak who was immense in Progulka / The Stroll , but has only appeared in a few films since then. The cast list is hugely impressive, and kind of reads like this:

A surprise film for me was last years UK movie Love+Hate a Gritty love story between two teenagers set against a backdrop of racism and cultural differences. The film is a debut by director Dominic Savage and stars Tom Hudson who was previously know to UK viewers as 'Baz' in UK Teen School drama 'Grange Hill'. If you've seen Bullet boy, Kidulthood, this much of the same, gritty realism depicting real life in the UK, and of course with superb acting. Sadly the film like most UK films deserving of a little success it didnt do too well at the UK box office only recieving a limited run and was recently shown on British TV.

The film was created by the Infernal Affairs team of Alan Mak, Andrew Lau and Felix Chong. Hollywood have a thing for these guys, as a remake is primed for next year or something.

SYNOPSIS:

Another movie which caught my eye recently is the Russian film 'The Tango Tanker', a Crime Drama staring 'Denis Nikiforov' of Boy S Tenyu fame. The film is from
top production house Central Partnership responsible for 'Volkodav',
'Bimmer 1' & 'Bimmer 2', Paragraf 78 etc.. Either way they are producing the most interesting films to come out of Russia.

Tango Tanker was released last year as a 6 Part TV Series, obviously too long for a theatrical release, recently came out on DVD ( with no subtitles ) the Series is being cut down and released theatrical sometime in 2007 or 2008 I believe. The same thing was done to Boy S tenyu which enjoyed good box office success and was sold to over 30 territories.

SYNOPSIS

Andrey Grekov, a young businessman, is up to his ears in debt to one of his competitors. He is out of cash, his assets have been frozen, and all he has to his name is an old tanker and a deal to transport a shipment of oil. 'Inspired by the true stories of Vietnamese refugees who fled their land after the fall of Saigon—and those who were forced to stay behind, Journey From The Fall follows one family’s struggle for freedom.

April 30, 1975 marked the end of Vietnam's two-decade-old civil war and the start of the exodus of hundreds of thousands of refugees. Despite his allegiance to the toppled South Vietnamese government, Long Nguyen (as Long Nguyen) decides to remain in Vietnam. Imprisoned in a Communist re-education camp, he urges his family to make the escape by boat without him. His wife Mai (Diem Lien), son Lai (Nguyen Thai Nguyen) and mother Ba Noi (Kieu Chinh) then embark on the arduous ocean voyage in the hope of reaching the U.S. and freedom.

A interesting movie from Indonesia is last years 'Koper' ( the lost suitcase ) writen and directed by 'Richard Oh' , the film is about a lonely bank clerk who finds suitcase full of cash. Although the film didnt do too well at the box office, its been accepted into recent Singapore Film Festival and the film sounds interesting from the premise and trailer. What with 2005 hit success Indonesian film 'Janji Joni' from Joko Anwar, this could be another Indonesian film that does success overseas.

An employee for archive department who seems like an invisible person to everyone, one day found a suitcase. In a zap, his life changed. From his neighbour, he and wife found out that a bank has just been robbed. A guy took away a suitcase full of money as much as a billion rupiahs. Does the suitcase that the employee found is the robbed suitcase? Many people’s speculations changed a simple life of this lowly employee whose got nothing but his collection of P.Ramlee’s album.

The film has recieved a DVD release with English subtitles, but I've yet to come across a store online that sells the dvd.

A nice looking Australian movie I came across is a cop thriller called 'Noise'. Sadly I cant find a trailer, although the Aussies usually have the cop movie nailed on, the plus poster looks nice. The film stars Brendan Cowell of Australian Drama 'Love my Way' fame and is directed by Matthew Saville who previously directed some episodes of the award winning drama 'The Secret life of us'. Noise opens in Australia 3rd May.

The synop goes like this:

'Graham McGahan (Brendan Cowell) is a cop - almost by default he thinks. Self-centered, beset with doubt and afflicted with tinnitus, a few days before Christmas he is sent by his boss to man a police van in a suburban shopping strip, after violent murders rock the local community.

McGahan starts to engage with traumatised members of the local community, as they deal with the after burn of these terrible crimes. He learns to come to grips with his role as a cop and a man. Writer-director Taika Waititi’s debut feature had its world premiere at Sundance in January before screening at both the Rotterdam and Berlin Film Festivals earlier this year.

The UK deal follows several offers being tabled in a flurry of British interest in the film.

'We are delighted to be releasing Eagle Vs Shark in cinemas in the UK - the British public love to discover new talent and Taika is certainly talented. He has crafted a film that is truly original and hilarious. We're going to have lots of fun working on it" said Danny Perkins, Head of Distribution for Optimum.

Eagle Vs Shark is a wry comedy that chronicles the romance of two awkward misfits. It features Loren Horsley and comedian Jemaine Clement in the lead roles as Lily and Jarrod.

'I am thrilled that the film will be shown in Europe. The continuing sales and distribution of this film ensures I will never have to work again.........this month,' said Taika Waititi.

The UK deal was negotiated by Optimum’s Managing Director Will Clarke with NZ Film’s Head of Sales & Marketing Kathleen Drumm and Business Affairs Executive James Thompson.

A German deal with Capelight Films has also just been signed. Capelight will release the film theatrically later this year.

Waititi developed the project at Sundance Institute’s Directors and Screenwriters Labs. Actor Horsley collaborated on the script.

Eagle vs Shark was produced by Ainsley Gardiner and Cliff Curtis of Whenua Films. It was made with finance from the NZ Film Commission (NZFC) and Unison Films.

Miramax will release the film in North America on June 15. Eagle will have its NZ premiere at the Wellington International Film Festival in July. It will be released in New Zealand by Hoyts Distribution on behalf of Icon later this year. Icon also has acquired Australian rights to the film.

World sales are being handled by NZ Film which is the sales arm of the NZFC.'

The film that seems to have set off a chain effect of UK action movies is Displaced, Apparently 6 years in the making, The film is to be distributed worldwide and they even managed to get Ian McKellen onboard. The official sites details of the film read like this:

Another recent Russian film I came across is this lavish historal war epic, a big budget Russian movie ( $10million I believe ) which will probably never see the light of day overseas. So a subtitled release is probably way out of the question. Either way the film looks great. Oh and also stars Wolfhounds (Volkodav iz roda serykh psov) very own Aleksandr Bukharov.

A very interesting Malaysian Action film I came across recently is the aptly titled Gangster staring the Malaysian Jude Law, 'Rosyam Nor', who seems to appear in every Malaysian film going. He even has 3 parts in this film. I havent been able to find a trailer for this, but a few interesting descriptions searching the web I found read like this. Also check out the nice looking screenshots.

Sadly I havent been able to find a English subtitle release anywhere, So if anyone outthere knows of one, gimme a hollar! Id love to check out this badboy!.

Another decent looking I came across is Polands 2007 foreign film Oscar submission.

This gritty looking film kind of looks like Polands version of The beat that my heart skipped.

A brief synposis I found surfing the web read like this:

'Woitik is 19, in casual jobs, in a relationship with Katya, a young woman with a son, from Ukraine.
His prospects are clean-up in a pig farm. When he participates in illegal boxing matches,
he is offered a security job by a local petty gangster with a surface charming manner but a brutal
philosophy especially for the retrieval of money loaned.'

The film opened in Poland last October, so hopefully a dvd release will happen soon.

This is Thailands very own Dark Comedic Crime Thriller. Its very much Thailands own version of the Australian film Two Hands sitting in the same genre. Its a Movie hollywood wished Tarantino had made, no doubt Taro will find something to borrow from this film in one of his future efforts! It WAS primed for a remake according to IMDB, but now all activitys seems to have dimished.

Simple premise your pretty girl next door ( Tum ) finds a box of dodgy cash sitting on her door step delivered to the wrong door. Shes just been sacked from her job, does she keep it or tell give the cash back to the scumbags who dropped it there. The acting is excellent, something which isnt apparent in more recent Thai films, ( Mercury man take note! ) and there's more plot twists then the severely overrated Lost.

There was a remake in the works but thank god its now been cancelled.

In my mind this is Pen's best film, Im a sucker for a good crime caper and this is top of the tree.

PS Does anyone know the name of the song near the end of the film?
